Elopement Prevention & Response
Elopement Prevention & Response
Practical tools and proactive strategies to keep individuals with disabilities safe and supported—before, during, and after a wandering incident.
Wandering—often called elopement—is a serious safety concern for individuals with autism or developmental disabilities. It can be difficult for them to recognize danger, know how to return to safety, or understand when others are trying to help. While elopement may be unpredictable, it isn’t unmanageable. With the right tools and planning, you can reduce the risk and respond effectively if it happens.
This free, 2-hour course equips caregivers, service providers, and professionals with practical strategies to prevent elopement and support safe recovery. You'll learn when to increase supervision, how to create a clear response plan, and how to use locative technology. The course also covers best practices for working with law enforcement and emphasizes the importance of caregiver self-care while advocating for the person’s safety.
This training is currently available at no cost to agencies and groups in Southern California (Kern County, San Luis Obispo County, and south). It is most effective when paired with our Elopement Prevention course for consumers.
