Beyond the Screen: The Heart and Soul of "Stronger Than Words"
At Get Safe, our mission is to empower individuals and communities through safety training and prevention education. We believe in transforming mindsets and reducing fear to create safer, more inclusive environments. This April, we are taking that mission to a global audience through the power of storytelling.
We are thrilled to announce the premiere of our new short film, "Stronger Than Words," created for the 2026 Easterseals Disability Film Challenge.
A Creative Sprint with a Purpose
The Easterseals Disability Film Challenge is a prestigious national competition that pushes filmmakers to produce authentic stories about disability within an intense five-day window. From the first line of the script to the final edit, our team - led by Director Stuart Haskin - completed the entire production in just 120 hours.
The goal was simple but profound: to ensure authentic and dignified representation by casting a man with Down syndrome in the lead role.
The Story: Finding Strength in Connection
The film introduces us to Benjamin, a young man with Down syndrome who experiences bullying.
Retreating to his room in frustration, Benjamin encounters Roy, a vibrant orange puppet who unexpectedly comes to life. Their conversation serves as the heart of the film:
Self-Acceptance: Roy humorously points out that everyone is different, and being "different" doesn't make someone weird.
Unique Gifts: While Benjamin initially feels he has no special talents, Roy helps him realize his true gift is being a "connector of people" who brightens days with his smile.
True Strength: Roy teaches Benjamin that while physical strength is great, real strength resides in the head and the heart.
The story culminates in a touching moment between Benjamin and his father, who reaffirms his support and reminds Benjamin that he is incredible, kind, and funny.
Facing the Hard Truths
While "Stronger Than Words" is an imaginative and tender journey, it is rooted in a sobering reality. Research shows that individuals with disabilities are two to three times more likely to experience bullying than their non-disabled peers. Bullying takes many forms - physical, verbal, social, and cyber - and it often happens in schools, workplaces, and out in the community.
As Director Stuart Haskin notes, these experiences stick with people long after the moment passes. By sharing Benjamin's story, we hope to reach people early and remind them of their inherent value.
A Message from the Cast
The film concludes with a powerful PSA featuring the cast and crew, including Aaron, Benjamin, Roy, Stuart, Caitlin, and Pete. Their message is clear:
You are not alone.
Be kind to one another.
If you see something, say something.
Be a good reporter and help your friends.
