Community Safety Programs For Persons With Physical And Developmental Disabilities

Given the frequency of victimization among this population (90% of persons with disabilities will be abused in their lifetime), safety and awareness training education is of the utmost importance. Rather than viewing disabilities as impairments, GET SAFE trainers encourage their students to work with their abilities to make them stronger and safer.

GET SAFE Consumer Advocacy Team (GSCAT) is a specialized, one-on-one approach to personal safety training. Developed in collaboration with leading attorneys, behaviorists, therapists, and other professionals in this field, GSCAT provides targeted training for individuals with developmental disabilities who:

  • Have experienced victimization
  • Demonstrated “at-risk” behaviors
  • Perpetrated crime

GSCAT Case Managers serve as advocates who assist service coordinators and educate clients on topics like:

  • Healthy relationships
  • Court advocacy
  • Safety awareness
  • Safer, healthier socialization and behavior outlets

GSCAT has been an ongoing program at the Regional Center of Orange County since 2007 and was adopted by Westside Regional Center and Inland Regional Center in 2008. GSCAT is also frequently included as an official component of diversionary programs for clients involved in the Orange and Los Angeles county courts.

Functional Legal Competency (FLC) is included as a training component of the GSCAT program for consumers court-ordered to undergo competency training. FLC is used to provide defendants with essential information regarding their legal situations and the process involved in assisting counsel in court, by increasing a consumer’s understanding of the charges, court-related proceedings, and the potential effects of the charge on the consumer’s life.
